Our Macarons are Gluten Free!

At Sucré, we pride ourselves on the quality of each and every one of our products. We make it a point to use the absolute freshest ingredients available, which is exactly what makes our treats so delicious! When you love and eat desserts as much as we do, it’s important to make sure you’re using the best ingredients. This is especially true when it comes to macarons. Our signature macarons are made from meringue-like cookies with luscious mousseline sandwiched in the middle, and come in spectacular colors. In fact, all but one of our macarons are gluten free.deen1

With macarons, the texture, the flavors, the filling, the freshness and the quality of the ingredients – all these elements play a vital role in the deliciousness of a macaron. All it takes is one small misstep to ruin the finished product. When a chef cuts corners, you can taste the shortcomings in every bite. At our confectionary, Chef Tariq Hanna’s skilled teams make these mouthwatering treats by hand – not by machine – to ensure the same exceptional quality in every batch. This is how we consistently achieve the perfect balance of crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Our festive Sucré macaron trays are custom made to ensure that our macarons stay perfectly intact! With this much tender loving care involved, it’s finally possible to indulge your sweet tooth without the guilt!

Chef Tariq Culinary Ambassador

Twenty-six years ago Chef Tariq Hanna came to the United States after completing his schooling in England. As an eighteen year old living in Detroit, he begun to learn and shape his craft of becoming a pastry chef.  Chef Tariq didn’t know it then, but he was on pace to achieve honors and accolades that other pastry chefs in America could only dream of.

Two years ago Chef Tariq was asked by Mayor Mitch Landrieu to take part in an economic initiative dinner.  This dinner was to highlight the success that New Orleans has had returning to its former glory post Katrina.

The Mayor invited Tariq to be a part of the dinner a second time, and this one would be a conjoined effort between the Mayor’s office and U.S. State Department.  It was after this dinner that Chef Tariq was asked to serve as a U.S. Culinary Ambassador through the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Culinary Partnership.  You might be asking yourself “What is a culinary ambassador?”   As culinary ambassador Chef Tariq can be called to be create state dinners for foreign dignitaries, visit other countries as ambassador for American cuisine, and educate youth on the growing movement of a healthier diet in the American landscape.

Two years ago Chef Tariq swore and oath to the America Flag to become a U.S. citizen, which he deems as the proudest moment of his life.  Despite being born in Nigeria to Arabic parents and spending much of his childhood in England he identifies himself as an AMERICAN pastry chef.  Tariq is here to shape the identity, individuality, and fortitude of the rising culture in American cuisine.

In the last few years his accolades and honors have piled up.  Chef Tariq and Sucé have been featured in numerous articles and television programs.  Tariq was named first ever honorary group commander to the 159th Fighter Wing of the Louisiana National Guard.  In 2011 he was named one of the top ten pastry chefs in America.  The U.S. Department of State asking Chef Tariq to serve as Culinary Diplomat in their inaugural class happened this past August. And most recently Dessert Professional Magazine named Chef Tariq one of the top ten best chocolatiers in North America.  It is very rare for one person to have the honors of best pastry chef and chocolatier.

Chef Tariq has made it his personal mission to make his culinary imprint in American by way of Sucre and New Orleans.  He works tirelessly creating and reinventing new confections to share with everyone.  Confections like the vast array of our unique macaron flavors, and his decadent chocolate work.  If you haven’t had the pleasure of allowing yourself to indulge in Sucé, you are truly missing out.  Visit our Magazine or Lakeside Sweet Boutiques, or order from our website www.shopsucre.com.  You and Chef Tariq will be happy that you did.

Chef Tariq’s Affinity for PB&J

What is more American than apple pie?  How about peanut butter and jelly?  And why has it taken so long for this beautiful collaboration of peanut butter and jelly to come alive at Sucré?  Wait no more because we have introduced two new signature items to the Sucré line.  Chef Tariq’s unique play on Peanut Butter & Jelly has created two very different cookies; one’s a little bit “old school” and the other one a little bit modern.

The first of these PB&J masterpieces is better known as the “Big Awesome Cookie,” in short “BAC.”  This delicious giant is a peanut butter cookie with a sweet raspberry jam center, topped with just a touch of oatmeal streusel.   My favorite way to enjoy this little monster is to put it in the microwave for 25 seconds until it’s warm and gooey in the center. Then, I top it off with a scoop of strawberry ice cream or gelato and finish it with a little drizzle of chocolate sauce. Warning – this is dangerously delicious! Take a peak and see

Tariq’s peanut butter and jelly “BAC” Big Awesome Cookie was just a warm up… The rival is the peanut butter and jelly macaron. This delicate cookie sandwich is brought to life by a sumptuous roasted peanut butter mousseline and fresh strawberry jam.  We assemble them in a clever sort of way, the peanut butter mousseline is piped in a ring on the outside and the strawberry jam rests in the middle. Then, the macaron shells are finished off with dusting crystallized sugar. My favorite way to enjoy this jewel is with a glass of warm milk. Try it. You will be transported in time to a delicious experience. See for yourself

Peanut Butter and Jelly isn’t just for a children’s school lunch any more.  These are sweet confections that everyone can enjoy.  The modern take with the slightly more sophisticated macaron will have you redefining your idea of PB&J.  The PB&J macaron will have you calling up your parents, grandparents, brothers, sister, and friends just to tell them about what you have discovered.

In contrast to the delicate sophistication of the macron is the “BAC.”  It tells you everything you need to know right in its name.  It’s BIG, it’s AWESOME, and it’s a COOKIE.  I loved my mom’s peanut butter cookies growing up, and biting into the “BAC” takes me back to a happy warm fuzzy place, eating a warm cookie right out of the oven or sitting in elementary school enjoy the simplicity of the peanut butter and jelly sandwich before recess.  These two sweet confections will simultaneously take you back to a simpler time while breaking your preconceptions of what the PB&J is.

Sucré Macaron Madness

Think back a bit. You’re at the DMV, or the bank, or the post office, or the tire shop, and you’re experiencing boredom. And not just the average level of boredom, we’re talking mind-numbing, ceiling-tile-counting, reciting-the-50-states-and-their-capitals levels of boredom. The kid in front of you has an iPad and he’s managed to distract himself with some game about zombies trying to storm a castle. Wouldn’t it be nice if you had a sweet alternative to all that gore and destruction? Wouldn’t it be nice if you had a little piece of Sucré in your pocket to bring you to a happier place?

We made it happen. That’s right, Sucré has gone mobile! We’ve taken our handcrafted artisan confections into a new dimension with a new game, Sucré Macaron Madness. It’s currently available on the iTunes App Store for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad for free! (Android version coming soon!) The official description states:  “Sucré Macaron Madness puts you in charge of making macarons for your super-cute customers. This fast-paced matching game will keep you on your toes as your customers ask for more and more macarons! How many customers can YOU serve?”  Sucré Macaron Madness is a free app and currently available in the iTunes app store or directly via this link:

This launch coincides with a redesign of our mobile website, so you can buy your macarons right after you serve them up to your 2D customers without ever logging on to your desktop or laptop computer. Founder and CEO Joel Dondis says, “We have seen increasing numbers of our customers using mobile devices and wanted to improve on a platform to ease the shopping process.  We spent months seeking the easiest possible solutions for our customers.”  He continues “When one visits a Sucré Sweet Boutique retail location we strive to provide an amazing dessert experience.  When someone received a Sucré gift we designed packaging and confections to give an amazing experience.  We want our website to offer an equally superior shopping experience.”

So there you have it. In New Orleans, in your home, or in line wherever you may be, we’re bringing you the Sucré Experience.

National Ice Cream/Gelato Day!

Today is National Ice Cream Day. A day during which boys and girls of every age gather and rally for their favorite ice cream. A little known holiday, we believe it’s time for National Ice Cream Day to get its due. You remember the joy you felt when you heard the ice cream truck turning onto your street, or the first time you tried a new flavor that you absolutely loved, those feelings are what today is about. That and so much more.

If you’ve been to our sweet boutiques, you know that technically we don’t sell ice cream at Sucré. What we do have is gelato. Gelato is different in far more than name and country of origin. Gelato is made with whole milk instead of heavy whipping cream, and gelato machines incorporate a lot less air in their processes, both of which allow for a creamier, denser treat with as much flavor as you can handle. Gelato is also kept at a higher temperature than ice cream, ensuring you get that cool & creamy flavor, and not that icy freezer flavor.

We have plenty of flavors for you to choose from, including the borderline sinful Triple Dark Chocolate, the luscious Toasted Almond, our nutty Pistachio, and our current seasonal offering: the perfectly sweet Nectar Cream. Dairy allergies? Not a problem. We also make sorbets, which are completely dairy-free, and are available in Mango, Strawberry, Raspberry, Lemon, and our specialty, Coconut Basil.

Don’t let another National Ice Cream/Gelato Day pass you by without celebration! Reclaim the joys of your youth today at either of our sweet boutiques: 3301 Veterans Memorial Blvd near Lakeside Mall, or 3025 Magazine Street in the garden district.
